The Supernatural and the Occult have always held the public interest, so it is only natural that Hollywood would find such topics good subjects around which to make movies. Some of the most amusing and even terrifying movies revolve around the subject of witches. Here are some of the top Witch movies that have entertained audiences over the years.
Bell, Book, And Candle
This is a romantic comedy starring a young Jimmy Steward and Kim Kovack. What do you do, if you are witch and a some woman annoys you? Of course you would put a spell on her finance to make him fall in love with you, which is exactly what happens in this witchy comedy. Unfortunately, the spell kind of backfires and the witch falls in love, and finds herself having to convince the man of her dreams that his feeling for her are genuine and not the result of some spell.
Rosemary’s Baby
The 1968 movie Rosemary’s baby terrified young audiences who flocked to the theaters to watch Rosemary Woodward (played by Mia Farrow) fight against the forces of evil a witches coven who wanted to lay claim to her baby. As the terrified Rosemary watches her husband become more and more involved with here “evil” neighbors she fears for her future as well as the life of her unborn infant and herself.
The Crucible
Based on the true story of the Salem witchcraft trials, the crucible takes a hard if somewhat fictionalized look at the hysteria that resulted in the deaths of several people in Salem Massachusetts branded as witches. The movie leaves you with the feeling that this was an avoidable tragedy and wondering how things could go far astray.
The Blair Witch Project
The Blair Witch Project was a movie that horrified plenty of younger viewers while actually featuring no witches, no blood and gore, and no spells or curses. More of a Phychological thriller than an actual witch movie, this movie relied on the fact that the entire film was shot by the actors themselves giving this movie a genuine feel that made it all the more terrifying. Unfortunately, slightly older audiences felt this was a rather “lame” attempt at creating a horror movie.
Witches of Eastwick
There has probably been no more attractive witches in film history than Cher, Michelle Pheiffer and Susan Sarandon whose less than pleasant side is revealed when the evil Jack Nicholson decides to seduce all three women. It doesn’t take him long to find out just how much of a Witch a woman can be when she feels used and mislead. Imagine that times three, and you have the makings of rather dark comedy that will hold your attention, even though it is far from academy award material.
Practical Magic
In our review of the Witches of Eastwick the statement was made that there was probably no more attractive witches in film history than the three witches in that movie. This needs to be corrected as Practical Magic stars the beautiful Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock. However, unlike the dark humor of “Eastwick” this is a light hearty comedy about a two witchy sisters who are cursed by the fact that any man who falls in love with is destined to die. Wanting to change the course of their personal history these two witch sisters set out to find true love using magic spells, and curses, and everything else at their disposal in an effort to find true and lasting love. Do they succeed? Pick up the movie and find out for yourself.
