‘Suicide Squad’, theories and predictions.
In case you’ve been living under a rock, did you know that Suicide Squad will be released later this year? With the ever increasing trend of casting villains as main characters we knew this would be inevitable, but we never dreamed it would be so good. Suicide Squad will feature an all star cast of villains: The Joker and Harlequin, Killer Croc, Deadshot, El Diablo, Boomerang, Enchantress, Slipknot and Katana. Not to mention a feature appearance by Ben Affleck as Batman, which we are not sure whether we are dreading or anticipating. So far the film has been very subtle, but here are our theories from press releases and the trailers we have seen.
The film will involve a lot of back story, and we mean a lot of back story. Just looking at the trailers we can see a lot of buildup, scenes of Harleen Quinzel’s transformation into Harlequin, as well as scenes that suggest that the backgrounds of Enchantress and Deadshot may also be explored, perhaps in less detail. This film will likely start out at the facility, but will invariably go into detail on the back stories before the main plot gets up to pace. Not that this will be a bad thing, after all their back stories are pretty badass and the build up to the modern day villains makes some sense, especially if the film is trying to reach out to an audience whose main experiences are limited to cartoons and recent films.
That said, Mr J may not feature in the main storyline at all. There it is, I said it. He is not listed as a main part of the squad, he does not appear in scenes involving the freaky alien goo – more on that later – and his every scene is set at the time of Harley Quinn’s creation. All this is telling me that the Joker will not be playing a major part in the main plot, which is a bit of a pity, but another reason not to begrudge the abundance of back story there will be.
Ah, yes, alien goo. The main villain will be an alien mind control force. So many people have suggested that the Joker will be the main villain… but from the trailers we just don’t see it. Some have even hinted that it may be Enchantress under Lex Luthor’s control, but it isn’t the most convincing argument we’ve heard. We think their antagonisms are strictly reserved for the backstories. The main villain here seems to be literally a pile of goo. Oh, and things made of that pile of goo. And goo covered soldiers carrying guns. Yeah, this is mind controlling alien slime. So somewhere between a zombie flick and the X-Files. Which, considering the team set up against them, could get interesting.
And for those reasons and more, there will be more comedy than the trailers suggested. Yes, there was comedy in the trailers, but there was also the sense that the comedy was punctuation for more serious scenes, not a major player. However they have now admitted they are redoing a few scenes specifically to elevate the comedy and action of the film, to meet the audience’s expectations. This will be great as long as they get it just right, but could cause issues if it starts to wear the actors down a little. Here’s hoping the new scenes are spot-on and bring some extra life to what was originally a very dark film. Especially seeing as…
This will set the groundwork for a DC universe sideline or expansion. Yes it will. A sequel will be shot in 2017, Warner Bros told us last month. And we can see this becoming a trend. After all, every character seems perfectly balanced to be a possible stand alone villain slash hero in later films. I am feeling more of Mr J and Harley Quinn, a Boomerang film, more of Will Smith as Deadshot and something perhaps focused on the “true to type” heroes in this film. This promises something akin to the expanding Marvel universes, except for DC villains. Which would be pretty epic.
