Who doesn’t love the “Alien” franchise? Scary monsters, horror movie graphics, sci-fi themes, and Giger’s weird hidden phalluses. We just love Ripley, love the monstrous Alien design and love the story. So much that we’ve been watching the original, its sequels and spinoffs since 1979 and are showing no signs of stopping. And it’s just been announced that a new film, is in the works and will be directed by Neill Blomkamp. Which has already got us excited and we don’t even know the due date yet!
So, rather than sit back and wait patiently, lets start guessing what it will be about. These are our top 5 things that will definitely, totally, absolutely happen in the next “Alien” film!
1: It will not follow the chronological order.
In a bit of a downer, the next “Alien” film isn’t following the actual order. Instead, it has already been revealed that it will pretend “Alien 3” and “Alien, Resurrection” never happened and just take off from where “Aliens” left off. In part, we’re actually kind of disappointed because, much like the “Star Wars” saga, this means we have to reorganize our DVD drawer and watch them all in order again. And if it’s an alternate timeline it may be a bit of a put off.
On the other hand, this twist opens so many new opportunities for exploration and invention. And the director is promising it is just a “bridge” between “Aliens” and “Alien 3”, so hopefully it will be full of fun new twists, turns and ideas without ruining anything for us.
2: It will have the most amazing graphics ever.
Following the excellent imagery of “Avatar”, the bar has been set very high, but we’re still counting on the Alien franchise to be revived by this film. And what sort of a revival would it be without awesome, mind-blowing graphics? We’re hoping to see the Alien leap out at us even in the non-3D version, realistic lighting, believable acting and all sorts of brilliant animations, from gore, to textures, to strange interactions between Alien and human. This will be the sort of film you go into with doubts and walk out of wondering whether these Aliens actually exist!
And coming from the creator of “District 9”, we’re hoping this can become reality.
3: The Aliens will be transformed, but still recognizable.
This film seems to be going down the path of being really true to type and really new and interesting at once. It will keep Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, just like the original two, but she is obviously an older and wiser Ripley than in the first two films. In the same way, the film seems to be starting to head towards a slightly new design for the Aliens themselves, as evidenced in Blomkamp’s early artwork. They are clearly recognizable, but are evolving like any species does. They are fascinatingly new, with new spikey bits, broad bits and all sorts of armor. This evolution is really cool. There is also some peculiar concept art of Ripley in Alien suits, dressed as an Alien or wearing Aliens, so we’re looking forward to seeing where he’s going with that, what he’s doing and how cool the end result is. And we’re secretly hoping it isn’t about androids again…
4: The Aliens will invade.
People everywhere have been umming and ahing about whether or not Blomkamp will take such an obvious path for the new film. I say he will. Just because it’s the most logical thing to do. They have encountered the Aliens, tracked them down and stolen their babies. Why wouldn’t the Aliens chase them back to Earth and try and give them a taste of their own medicine? This would add some of the bleakness into the franchise, tying “Aliens” and “Alien 3” together in a way that might, just might, make Alien fans everywhere a little happier with “Alien 3” and it’s nihilistic, tragic tones. It should also really spice up the entire film and make it that little bit more interesting.
5: It will make us forget “Prometheus” was even a thing.
We can only hope. I mean, what was up with “Prometheus”? What were they even going for? It shed no light whatsoever on the series, didn’t even have much of a plot and was all round ridiculous.
We’re also crossing our fingers that “Aliens 5” will come out after “Prometheus 2”, so it can erase the sure to be awful memory of that film as well. “Prometheus 2”? What are people even thinking?
