History Based Movies

Historical movies have always been a part of the movie scene. These movies take you back into time and you can be a part of history when you watch them. Most of the historical movies have the setting as the director visualizes that point in historical time. The sets are usually lavish and take you back where you can be a part of the history. Many of these movies though interesting to watch may have liberties taken by the director to making them more appealing. The facts as depicted in these movies may not always be factual as many a history buff has noticed. But then again the movies are made for entertainment and for profit, so you can understand that the makers would take a few liberties to make them more appealing, besides they usually have these movies as ‘based on a true story’ which allows them to bend history a little.

The list of history based movies is huge, there are hundreds of movies made that are based on history and it would be difficult to compile a whole list of all of them. Then again some movies have been made more than once about a historical fact or point in time. There are also history based movies portraying the lives of historical figures, important events that made an impact on our civilization or changed the course of history itself. Here are a few well made movies that are based on history and are quite compelling to watch.

1. 300 Spartans: A movie about the events that lead up to the battle of Thermopylae, a battle that is still remembered and taught in military schools.

2. Cleopatra: A few versions about the life of this queen of Egypt have been made. Though they all contain the later part of her life after she meets Julius Caesar.

3. Braveheart: The movie about William Wallace and his struggle against the English. The story may have taken a few liberties with the historical facts but it still depicts a part of Scottish history.

4. Schindlers List: A movie about one of the darkest times in history. It is an inspiring movie based on how Oskar Schindler attempts to help Jews persecuted by the Nazis.

5. Gandhi: This is a movie based on history and follows the life of one of the most influential men in our times.

6. The Passion of Joan of Arc: There are many movies that have been made about Joan of Arc. This is a movie that depicts the trial of Joan of Arc and the Church which wants her to recant that she followed Holy visions from God.

7. JFK: this movie about the assassination of President Kennedy is based on historical fact but it is a movie that depicts one of the conspiracy theories about the assassination. Compellingly made though may not be factual.

8. Pearl Harbor: A few movies have been made about the infamous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. This movie is based on historical fact but takes quite a few liberties with the historical accuracy.
