The Oscars are always an awesome time of year for all film lovers. Whether your favorite film was nominated or neglected, you want to see who wins Best. There is always everyone’s darling and our most hated celebs there. And I’m pretty sure that they always nominate something awful and controversial just to get us to watch.
And some weird and awful things will always happen at the Oscars. But some weird and WONDERFUL things happen there too. So here are my top twelve most wonderful things that happened this year.
12: Fear is the condom of life!
It was a moment of silliness in the middle of so much inspirational and motivational speeches and we loved it! This is officially one of the best quotes to come out of the Oscars yet. Brilliant, funny and so true! It made us all stop and appreciate life a little bit more.
11: Crisis Hotline won Best Documentary Short Subject!
Loved the Crisis Hotline documentary. Raw, touching, intense and very, very real. It really opens your eyes and was totally deserving of an award. There were many other deserving documentaries too, though! It must have been a very tough call.
10: The Animations Were All Awesome!
So many brilliant animations from so many great studios! Disney’s “Feast” was definitely my favorite. Fun, energetic and of course featuring an adorable dog. The style in “A Bigger Picture” took some getting used to, but I loved the story, the voice acting and the characters. “A Single Life” was so much fun to watch and “The Dam Keeper” was really emotional. With great animations like these, I’m surprised they managed to pick one as the winner!
9: Eddie Redmayne Won Best Actor!
His portrayal of Stephen Hawking was beautiful and touching. I seriously didn’t know much about Stephen Hawking’s early life until I saw “The Theory Of Everything”. I actually cried watching it. Eddie Redmayne has confessed that not only hasn’t suffered any debilitating disorders, but he’s also hopeless at science. Yet he portrayed a totally believable Stephen Hawking and we loved it!
8: The Rock Loved The Lion King!
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate the fact that Dwayne The Rock Johnson cried during “The Lion King”. Even a big man like him has a heart like every one of us. I love catching glimpses of celebs’ humanity like this!
7: Meryl Streep’s In Memoriam.
Her introduction and the In Memoriam itself were lovely. It was shocking to see how many known faces and names had passed away in 2014. They added so much to the world and we all cried for them. It was beautiful.
6: Lady Gaga’s AMAZING Singing!
So many people just know Lady Gaga as an eccentric performance artist. So really, it was quite a shock to see her looking… not quite so shocking? And that voice! Wow. She is a greatly talented woman all round and I think many opinions were changed when we saw her perform the songs from “The Sound of Music” so beautifully. Lovely voice, lovely gal, we love you, Gaga!
5: Neil Patrick Harris’s Comedy!
This year’s Oscars were still quite white, the actresses were still pestered about who made their dress and a bunch of idiots on Twitter took over the debate on sexism in Hollywood. So Neil Patrick Harris’s self-conscious comedy really helped to lighten the mood. From “Hollywood’s best and whitest” to his jibe at Jason Bateman, he was hilarious and raising social awareness at once.
4: Julianne Moore Won Best Actress!
Her amazing portrayal of a mother and scientist with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease in “Still Alice” was moving. You believed her. She looked like she really was going through the motions, suffering and pulling through. It was scary, a reminder of what can happen in life, as intense and real as a documentary. If she hadn’t won, we’d have been pretty annoyed.
3: Birdman Did So Good!
Yay! “Birdman”! That is all.
2: Laura Poitras Supports Edward Snowden!
In a world where we’re all cynics, it was quite warming to hear an actress speak out in support of a man so reviled by so many governments and so loved by the everyday person.
1: Patricia Arquette’s Speech On Wage Equality.
Even though some idiots chose to use it as a platform to rant from, Patricia Arquette’s speech on the gender wage gap was very true and perhaps too close to home for many. She showed us that even in Hollywood, land of free opportunity, being a woman means taking a pay cut. It was in some ways the highlight of the night.
